JNIM Overruns Diapaga Army Outpost — Est Region, Burkina Faso; 50+ Killed; Last FAB Buffer Before Togo Border Falls

| Sahel Insurgency

JNIM fighters overran the Burkinabè army outpost at Diapaga in Burkina Faso's Est Region on May 12–13, 2026, in one of the most strategically significant single attacks in the insurgency's southern expansion campaign. More than 50 soldiers and VDP (Volunteers for Defense of the Homeland) auxiliaries were killed as JNIM assailants seized the outpost, destroyed buildings and monuments, and released inmates from the local prison — which held suspected insurgents and jihadist fighters, thereby replenishing JNIM's operational capacity. JNIM also seized weapons and military equipment before withdrawing from the town. Diapaga's geopolitical significance is stark: it was the last major FAB buffer outpost before the Togolese border, approximately 25 km from Togo's northern frontier. Its fall threatens the Lomé–Fada N'Gourma–Ouagadougou commercial corridor — a critical supply artery connecting Burkina Faso's landlocked capital to the port of Lomé — and places Togolese border towns including Tambi, Koundjoaré, Mango, and Dapaong at direct risk of JNIM interdiction. The Diapaga attack follows the May 11 assault on Djibo (Sahel Region capital, 100+ killed) by just 48 hours, revealing JNIM's capacity to simultaneously overrun provincial capitals in two different regions 500+ km apart. Combined, JNIM's operational cluster from May 11–13 — Djibo, Sollé camp, and Diapaga — demonstrates the insurgency's continued expansion from the northern Sahel Region southeastward toward the Gulf of Guinea coastal states. The attack comes after Burkina Faso's AES junta declared its Unified Force 'ready for large-scale operations' just weeks earlier at the April 16–17 CCEMC meeting in Ouagadougou. The Traoré government has not issued official casualty figures; FAB units helicopter-inserted to Diapaga after JNIM withdrew arrived without vehicles or artillery support.
