JNIM Kills 30–50+ Villagers in Twin Mopti Massacres — Korikori and Gomossogou Attacked Simultaneously as Retaliation Against Dan Na Ambassagou Militia
JNIM fighters simultaneously raided two villages — Korikori and Gomossogou — in central Mali's Mopti Region on the night of May 6–7, 2026, with the attacks widely reported on May 8. Militants opened fire on residents, ransacked homes, and systematically torched properties. AFP quoted local sources placing the death toll at 'at least 30'; diplomatic and aid sources told Reuters the toll reached at least 50; the West African security journalism group WAMAPS put the provisional toll at 'more than 50 villagers killed, several still missing.' Victims included militiamen, teenagers, and children. JNIM cited the Dan Na Ambassagou (DNA) self-defense militia — which cooperates with the Malian army against JNIM — as the justification for the attacks, consistent with JNIM's established campaign of targeted reprisals against communities perceived as supporting FAMa counter-insurgency operations in the Mopti heartland. The Mopti Region is JNIM's Katiba Macina heartland: it is the operational base of JNIM commander Amadou Koufa, site of the 2022 Moura massacre (500+ killed by FAMa and Africa Corps), and the zone that recorded the highest concentration of both jihadist attacks and inter-communal violence since 2016. The twin attacks came as JNIM simultaneously maintained its siege posture around Bamako following the May 6–7 Kenieroba prison assault, demonstrating JNIM's ability to conduct multi-theater operations across central and southern Mali concurrently. The Malian army stated it subsequently launched a 'targeted operation' in the area, neutralizing approximately a dozen jihadist fighters. No independent verification of casualty figures is possible given the junta's media embargo on Mopti Region conflict zones.
