Drones hit Moscow's own Kapotnya refinery — supplier of 40% of the capital's fuel — in year's largest overnight barrage

Ukrainian drones struck the Gazprom Neft-owned Moscow Refinery in the capital's Kapotnya district overnight on Sept 19-20, reportedly hitting the combined oil refining unit (CORU) and the ELOU-AVT-6 primary distillation unit and sparking a large fire, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed. The plant — one of Russia's ten largest refineries at roughly 11 million tonnes/year of capacity, just 15km from the Kremlin — supplies about 40% of Moscow city's fuel market and 70% of the wider Moscow region's petrol and aviation-gas demand, making it the single most consequential refinery for the country's largest fuel-consumption market. The strike was part of what Sobyanin called the most massive Ukrainian drone assault on the capital to date, with authorities claiming roughly 450 drones intercepted approaching Moscow and over 1,600 downed nationwide overnight; a separate hit on a logistics warehouse complex in Ramensky district and falling debris elsewhere in Moscow Oblast left at least two dead and six injured, though no casualties were reported at the refinery itself. The attack landed on the final day of Russia's parliamentary elections and follows the Sept 17 strike on Yaroslavl's Slavneft-YANOS refinery, which also supplies the Moscow market.
