59 PQ members sworn in at National Assembly, oath to the people of Quebec rather than the King
The 59 elected Parti Québécois members were sworn in at the National Assembly in Quebec City, taking an oath of loyalty to the people of Quebec rather than to the King, as permitted since a 2022 rule change. The Lieutenant-Governor was reportedly not invited. A Quebec lawyer has asked the Superior Court to force members to swear allegiance to the King, arguing the 2022 law is unconstitutional, and seeks a ruling before the legislature reconvenes in mid-November. Premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is due to present his cabinet on Oct. 21. Outlets differ on whether the ceremony fell on Wednesday Oct. 14 or Thursday Oct. 15.
