VRAEM operation kills Shining Path remnant commander 'camarada Richard' one day into Fujimori government
Twenty-four hours after Keiko Fujimori took office, Peruvian armed forces engaged in intense combat with Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) narco-terrorist remnants at Alto Mantaro in the VRAEM (Valle de los Ríos Apurímac, Ene y Mantaro). The operation killed Jhonny Curo Rojas, alias 'camarada Richard', a senior commander of the group's residual faction, and left one soldier wounded. Air Force helicopters providing tactical support sustained 18 bullet impacts. Security forces recovered weapons, ammunition, explosives, communications equipment and military supplies from the site. President Fujimori visited military bases in the VRAEM to reaffirm her support for the armed forces and police involved.
