Keiko Fujimori officially declared winner of Peru's presidential race

Peru's electoral office (ONPE/JNE) confirmed on July 3 that Keiko Fujimori edged leftist rival Roberto Sánchez by just 49,641 ballots out of roughly 18 million cast, taking 50.13% of valid votes to Sánchez's 49.86% in the closest presidential race in Peru's modern history. The official proclamation followed weeks of vote-tabulation swings after the June 7 runoff. Sánchez alleged irregularities in the overseas vote count and said he would appeal to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights; Peru's National Jury of Elections (JNE) found no such inconsistencies and rejected his appeal. Fujimori, a four-time presidential candidate, becomes the first woman elected by popular vote to lead Peru.
