IDF, Shin Bet Kill Hamas Finance Chief Who Managed Group's Pre-October 7 Qatari Funding, in Khan Yunis Strike

The IDF and Shin Bet killed Muhammad (Mahmoud) Abu Alwan, chief of Hamas's finance department, in a joint airstrike on a vehicle in western Khan Yunis on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Defense Minister Israel Katz announced. According to Army Radio, Abu Alwan managed Hamas's external funds in the years leading up to the October 7, 2023 massacre, including a Qatari grant, and during the war redirected the group's financing toward internal sources, including exploitation of humanitarian aid and alleged theft of merchandise from Gazan store owners. Katz said 'we praise the IDF and the Shin Bet for the precise operation' and vowed 'we will not allow Hamas to rebuild its strength, and we will not stop until there is no Hamas in Gaza.' Local health officials cited by Reuters said at least two people, named as Osama Abu Khater and Mohammad Abu Elwan, were killed in the strike and two others wounded.
