IDF Kills Hamas Nukhba Fighter Who Took Part in October 7 Killing of Nahal Brigade Commander Col. Yonatan Steinberg

The IDF and Shin Bet said Thursday, September 10, 2026 that they killed Ismail Ibrahim Darwish Kandil, a Nukhba operative in Hamas's military wing, in a strike in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza. The military said Kandil infiltrated Israeli territory on October 7, 2023 and took part in the killing of Col. Yonatan Steinberg, commander of the IDF's Nahal Brigade, and that he had recently advanced attacks against IDF troops and Israeli civilians while working to restore Hamas's capabilities in the area, in violation of the ceasefire. The IDF said it took steps to mitigate harm to civilians, including precise munitions and aerial surveillance, before the strike. Kandil is at least the eighth named October 7 perpetrator the IDF has confirmed killing since the war began.
