On May 29, 2026 (Day 965 / Ceasefire Day 232), Israeli and international media identified Imad Aqel — Hamas's 'home front' logistics and weapons infrastructure commander — as the sole remaining senior Hamas figure directly connected to the planning and execution of the October 7, 2023 attack. Aqel (born 1971, Jabaliya refugee camp) heads Hamas's internal logistics, weapons production, and tunnel infrastructure command. He was not a public-facing leader, which Israeli intelligence analysts say was the primary reason he survived Israel's systematic elimination campaign targeting all ~3,000 October 7 participants. Aqel is distinguished from other killed commanders in that he did not directly command the October 7 infiltration units — his role was preparatory: overseeing tunnel construction, weapons stockpiling, and logistical supply chains that enabled the assault. Israel has attempted to kill Aqel before: a 2003 Israeli operation killed several of his associates; in 2009, the IDF bombed his home in Nuseirat — he was not present.
