UN Security Council Calls for Gaza Ceasefire Consolidation; Warns of Rising Violence

| October 7

On April 12, 2026, the UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process addressed the UN Security Council (UNSC meeting SC16284), calling for consolidation of the Gaza ceasefire and an immediate halt to escalating violence and settlement activity in the West Bank. The briefing came as Hamas disarmament negotiations remained in a critical impasse following the expiry of the Board of Peace deadline on April 9 and Hamas's submission of counterproposals on April 11. The UN briefer urged all parties to refrain from actions that could unravel the fragile truce in place since October 2025. The UNSC session took place against the backdrop of the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict, which has diverted international diplomatic and financial resources from the Gaza reconstruction effort. The UN also noted that the Board of Peace funding shortfall — less than $1B of $17B pledged — was severely limiting humanitarian and reconstruction activities in Gaza.
