South Africa Files ICJ Genocide Case Against Israel

South Africa filed an application against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on December 29, 2023, alleging Israel was committing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza, in violation of the Genocide Convention. Hearings began January 11, 2024. The ICJ issued provisional measures on January 26, ordering Israel to take all measures to prevent genocidal acts, but did not order a ceasefire. Over 50 countries filed declarations of intervention. Israel strongly rejected the characterization, calling the case 'blood libel.'
