Military Deploys A-29 Super Tucano Jets for Oyo Kidnap Rescue as Week's Abduction Toll Reaches ~100
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed deployment of Alenia Aermacchi A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft for surveillance and rescue support operations over Oyo State's forested borders, following the abduction of 46 teachers and students from three schools in Oriire LGA and the beheading of teacher Michael Oyedokun. The week's abduction toll across Nigeria — combining the Oyo attack (46 people), the Borno Askira-Uba abductions (42–82 students), and several smaller incidents — approached an estimated 100 persons, according to Amnesty International. President Tinubu directed the Chief of Defence Staff to prioritize the rescue operations. The Super Tucano jets — part of a US-Nigeria deal signed under former President Buhari — were also being used for the concurrent ISWAP strikes in the northeast, stretching air force operational capacity. Civil society group CDWR (Centre for Democracy and Welfare Research) issued a formal statement demanding 'immediate rescue' of the captives and accountability for the security breakdown.
