SACEUR Grynkewich: US Will Deliver 'Critical but More Limited' Capabilities as Europe Steps Up
In a Reuters phone interview reported September 25, 2026, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus Grynkewich said the United States will keep supplying the alliance with 'critical but more limited capabilities' as Europeans assume a larger share of continental defense. He said NATO is increasing intelligence sharing after sabotage and incidents apparently linked to Russia, including a drone incident at a German airport and a Russian ship firing flares at a Danish helicopter. Grynkewich called a limited Russian attack 'unlikely but something that we can't rule out.' He put the US troop presence in Europe at about 80,000 and stressed there is 'no predetermined outcome' from the ongoing Pentagon force posture review.
