2 US Embassy Officials and 2 Mexican Officers Killed in Chihuahua Convoy Crash After Drug Lab Raid
Four people were killed when the lead vehicle of a five-car official convoy skidded off a road and plunged into a ravine at approximately 2 a.m. on April 19, while returning from a joint drug laboratory raid in Morelos municipality, Chihuahua. The dead included two US Embassy personnel — described as 'instructor officers' specializing in drone and tactical training — and two Mexican State Investigation Agency (AEI) officials: regional director Pedro Roman Oseguera Cervantes and officer Manuel Genaro Mendez Montes. The convoy had just participated in the raid of six clandestine synthetic drug labs described as 'one of the largest sites found in the country.' The crash triggered a diplomatic controversy: President Sheinbaum stated publicly that she had not been informed of the joint US-state operation. At her April 21 mañanera, Sheinbaum noted the Chihuahua prosecutor had changed his account of events and announced a full investigation into whether the Constitution or law was violated. The US Embassy confirmed the deaths through Ambassador Ken Salazar's office.
