Transport Workers Blockades Across 20+ States Pressure Sheinbaum on Cartel Insecurity

| Mexico

One day after transport workers organized highway blockades across more than 20 of Mexico's 32 states, the demonstrations continue to reverberate. ANTAC (National Association of Transport Drivers) and FNRCM led the protest against rampant cartel violence targeting freight operations: approximately 40 trucks are hijacked daily in Mexico, 80% with violence. Cargo theft, kidnappings of drivers, extortion payments at cartel checkpoints, and rising fuel costs have made freight transport untenable across large sections of the country. The blockades represent a significant grassroots pressure on President Sheinbaum to produce tangible security outcomes — particularly as the World Cup (June 11) security preparations consume federal resources and attention. Sheinbaum's security secretary pledged additional National Guard deployments along key commercial corridors.
