Corpus Christi Massacre — Paramilitary 'Halcones' Attack Students

| Mexico

President Luis Echeverría — who had been Interior Minister during Tlatelolco — authorized paramilitary 'Halcones' (Falcons) to attack a student march on June 10, 1971, Corpus Christi Day. The attack killed an estimated 30–120 students. Film footage was seized and suppressed. Echeverría dismissed the Mexico City regente (governor) but no senior official was charged. The massacre confirmed that the 1968 repressive apparatus had not been dismantled; Echeverría's subsequent 'democratic opening' was widely seen as window dressing.
