Texas Declares Independence from Mexico — Republic of Texas Created
Anglo-American settlers (colonized under the 1821 Austin land grants) declared independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836, after President Santa Anna abolished the 1824 federalist constitution. The Battle of the Alamo (February 23–March 6, 1836) and the massacre of surrendered Mexican prisoners at Goliad were key events. The subsequent Battle of San Jacinto (April 21) saw Santa Anna captured. Mexico never recognized Texan independence, setting up the future US annexation dispute.
