US Navy Occupies Tampico Without Resistance
Commodore David Conner's Gulf Squadron occupied the strategically vital port of Tampico after Mexican forces withdrew without fighting. Tampico's harbor would serve as a key staging base for General Scott's Veracruz expedition. Its peaceful capture reflected the deteriorating state of Mexican coastal defenses in the Gulf.
