Houthi Drone Toward Taif Intercepted, Kills One; Saudi Strikes on Yemen Telecom Towers Leave Four More Dead

Saudi air defenses intercepted a Houthi drone headed toward the Taif governorate on Sep 17, but the interception itself killed a Yemeni resident in Saudi Arabia and injured two others. In retaliation, Saudi warplanes struck telecommunications towers in Yemen's Taiz province and the town of Abs, killing a civilian in Taiz; Houthi media separately reported three children killed elsewhere in the strikes, for five dead across the exchange. Houthi leader Abdel-Malik al-Houthi rejected Saudi Arabia's Sep 16 claim that the group had targeted Mecca as "a heinous lie" and "great propaganda." Yemen's Saudi-backed Presidential Council head Rashad al-Alimi said Houthi forces were "suffering heavy blows" on multiple fronts. Kuwait, Bahrain and the EU condemned the Houthi attacks; Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson acknowledged Mecca's religious sanctity while questioning Saudi Arabia's claim absent evidence.
