Aum Shinrikyō Sarin Attack on Tokyo Subway
On March 20, 1995, members of the Aum Shinrikyō doomsday cult simultaneously released sarin nerve agent on five Tokyo subway lines during rush hour, killing 13 people and injuring 5,800. It was the world's first large-scale chemical terrorism attack in a modern city. Cult leader Shoko Asahara (Chizuo Matsumoto) was arrested, convicted, and executed in 2018. The attack triggered major reforms to Japan's anti-terrorism and religious organization laws.
