IDF Strikes Kill Three Hamas Commanders — Including Ex-Jailer of Freed Hostages Alexander and Zangauker — Plus At Least 4 Palestinians Across Gaza

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, Israeli forces carried out a series of strikes across Gaza. In Khan Younis, the IDF killed Ismail Mohammed Ibrahim Barim, whom it identified as a Hamas military commander who had held hostages Edan Alexander, Matan Zangauker and Avera Mengistu in a tunnel in southern Gaza before their release; the military said he had 'recently advanced attacks on troops and Israeli civilians' and helped restore Hamas capabilities while 'systematically violating the ceasefire.' A separate strike in Gaza City's Shati refugee camp killed Bilal Ibrahim Saleh Raqi'i, identified as a commander in Hamas's anti-tank unit, and another strike in Khan Younis killed Azzam Rifaat Abd Abadala of Hamas's Khan Younis Brigade. Alongside the targeted strikes, at least four Palestinians were killed in incidents Al Jazeera and Wafa attributed to Israeli fire: one in an attack on a displaced-persons tent west of Gaza City, one in a drone strike on a tent in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, one in a drone strike on an electric bicycle at the al-Sinaa intersection, and one more in a separate Gaza City drone strike; several others were wounded, one critically.
