UN Security Council: West Bank at 'Breaking Point' Amid Settler Violence, Displacement Surge

UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Ramiz Alakbarov told the Security Council the occupied West Bank is at a 'breaking point' as Israel pursues what officials described as 'de facto annexation.' As of August 10, 76 Palestinians (including 18 children) had been killed in the West Bank in 2026 by Israeli forces or settlers; 174 Palestinian children have been verified killed since January 2024. The UN documented more than 1,430 settler-violence incidents in 2026 affecting roughly 260 Palestinian communities, and roughly 3,800 Palestinians — nearly half of them children — have been displaced this year through settler violence, demolitions and evictions. Officials cited Israeli approval of about 12,360 new settlement housing units, $431 million allocated for 34 new settlements, and Israel's continued withholding of roughly $6 billion in Palestinian tax revenues.
