Migration Ministry: Over 30,000 Displaced People Returned to Sinjar in 2026

Iraq's Ministry of Migration and Displaced Persons said more than 30,000 people have returned this year to the Yazidi heartland of Sinjar in Nineveh province and the surrounding areas of Qahtaniya and Sinune, as security and services stabilize. Ministry spokesperson Ali Abbas called the figure 'significant compared to previous years.' Return rates for Sinjar district remain around 43%, with roughly 157,000 people — many from Sinjar — still hosted in 23 camps across the Kurdistan Region as of mid-2026, more than a decade after the 2014 Yazidi genocide.
