Senior IRGC Commander Hossein Zarifi Killed in Clash With Gunmen in Southeastern Iran

Brig.-Gen. Hossein Zarifi, commander of the IRGC's Shahid Sajjad Operational Headquarters in Saravan, was killed in a clash with an armed cell in the Jihadabad area of Saravan, Sistan and Baluchestan province, near the Pakistan border. The IRGC Ground Forces' Quds Regional Headquarters said a joint IRGC-Intelligence Ministry-police raid targeted a group it described as planning an attack; five members of the cell were killed and others arrested in the ensuing exchange of fire. No group has claimed responsibility. Zarifi had served in the province for over a decade; his funeral was held in Saravan on Sept 25.
