IAEA Board Refers Iran to UN Security Council for First Time in 20 Years

The IAEA's 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution reporting Iran to the UN Security Council for breaching its non-proliferation obligations — the first such referral in two decades — with 23 of 35 members in support. The resolution directs IAEA chief Rafael Grossi to transmit the resolution, prior board decisions, and his latest report to the Security Council and General Assembly, and calls on Iran to provide information and inspector access to sites bombed by Israel and the US since the war began. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi condemned the move as based on 'fabrications,' writing on X that Western states 'attack Iran's nuclear facilities under safeguards, disrupt the normal verification process, and then use that very disruption as a pretext to issue a resolution.'
