Trump Threatens 'Economic D-Day' Against Iran and Its Backers; Araghchi Calls It a Diversion From US Debt Crisis
President Trump said the US will launch what he called 'the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY' against Iran, threatening 'TREMENDOUS' economic consequences for any nation that helps Tehran evade sanctions, and branded the campaign an 'ECONOMIC D-DAY,' urging allies to help 'isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat.' Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the threat as a distraction, writing that the 'so-called Economic D-Day is a diversion from America's own crisis: unprecedented debt & surging interest costs,' and accused Washington of 'economic terrorism' that 'threatens the global economy and the sovereignty of countries beyond Iran.' The exchange came a day after the UAE suspended all trade with Iran and follows the collapse of the 60-day US-Iran MOU on Aug 17.
