Saudi Arabia Intercepts Three Drones Launched from Iraqi Airspace — Day 80

Saudi Arabia's air defenses intercepted three drones that were launched from Iraqi airspace toward the kingdom on May 17–18, 2026 (Days 79–80), according to reporting confirmed by the Times of Israel and Al Jazeera. The drones represent the latest in a series of Iran-linked attacks on Saudi infrastructure since the conflict began February 28. Saudi Arabia has previously intercepted dozens of Iranian-linked drones throughout the conflict — including 10 drones intercepted on March 29 — but the Iraqi airspace launch vector is significant as it marks continued use of Iraqi proxy launch platforms even during the nominal ceasefire period. No casualties were reported from the Saudi intercepts. The attacks come as Iran-linked actors also struck the UAE's Barakah nuclear power plant with a drone on May 17 and Saudi Arabia reports drone threats from Iraqi-based proxies. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has consistently refused to publicly join the US-led coalition but has maintained defensive cooperation with CENTCOM throughout the conflict. Iranian proxies in Iraq — including Kata'ib Hezbollah and allied factions — have continued operating despite US strikes on Iraqi militia positions earlier in the conflict.
