Israel and Lebanon Hold Third Round of Washington Peace Talks; Lebanon-Israel Ceasefire Expires May 17; Death Toll Reaches 2,896 — Day 76
Israeli Deputy National Security Adviser Yossi Draznin and Lebanese Presidential Special Envoy Simon Karam opened a third round of direct peace talks in Washington, D.C. on May 14–15, 2026 (Day 76) with the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire set to expire May 17. The two sides remain split on key issues: Lebanon is pressing for a comprehensive ceasefire, a binding timetable for Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanese territory, and the release of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel. Netanyahu has warned the 'conflict is not over' despite the ceasefire. On the ground, Israel and Hezbollah continued to exchange fire in southern Lebanon despite the April 16 ceasefire declaration. Al Jazeera's Day 76 summary reported Israel 'pounding Lebanon' as talks were under way in Washington. The Lebanese Health Ministry's updated toll as of the Washington talks: 2,896 killed since March 2, including 589 women, children, and medics; 8,000+ wounded; 1.2 million displaced. The Lebanon talks are strategically linked to the broader Iran-US negotiations: a durable Lebanon-Israel ceasefire would reduce Hezbollah's ability to serve as an Iranian proxy front while also reducing IDF operational burden. The Lebanon-Israel diplomatic track is being managed partly through the same Washington/Vatican channels that Rubio used in earlier Iran talks.
