Israeli Airstrike Kills Lebanese Journalist Amal Khalil; Five Dead Across Southern Lebanon

| Iran Conflict

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on April 23 killed at least five people, including journalist Amal Khalil. Al Jazeera and Lebanese officials confirmed Khalil's death in the strike — she was the first Lebanese journalist killed during the April 2026 phase of hostilities, drawing condemnation from international press-freedom organizations and the Lebanese government. The strikes came one day after the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire had ostensibly been renewed; Hezbollah and Israel continue to accuse each other of violations. Lebanon and Israel are negotiating a ceasefire extension through US mediation, with talks ongoing in Washington (see below). A second French soldier also died on April 23 from injuries sustained in a suspected Hezbollah ambush in southern Lebanon, raising French fatalities from the conflict to two. Lebanese PM Nawaf Salam repeated Lebanon's demand for full Israeli withdrawal south of the Litani River. The Lebanese government formally condemned the journalist killing at the UN. Israel did not immediately comment on Khalil's death, citing ongoing operations against Hezbollah infrastructure in the area.
