J&K's 80th Independence Day Passes Off Peacefully Under Multi-Layered Security Grid

Jammu & Kashmir marked India's 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026 without incident, despite the Intelligence Bureau's August 11 warning of a possible ISI-backed infiltration or terror plot timed to the holiday. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hoisted the national flag at the main J&K function at Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium, which was ringed by sharpshooters, drone and CCTV surveillance with facial recognition, quick-reaction teams, and bomb-disposal units; checking and frisking were intensified region-wide, including along the LOC and International Border in Jammu, Samba, Rajouri, and Poonch, and in North Kashmir's Uri, Keran, Tangdar, and Gurez sectors. J&K IGP V.K. Birdi said 'August 15 is the people's function; the role of the police and security agencies is to organise and secure the celebrations.' Thousands attended flag-hoisting ceremonies at district and block levels across the Valley with no reported security incidents.
