Mamata Banerjee Demands Modi Response to Pakistan's Kolkata Threat; Diplomatic Row Intensifies

| India-Pakistan

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on April 5, 2026 publicly demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi respond to Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif's threat to 'take it to Kolkata.' Banerjee, addressing reporters in Kolkata, said the people of West Bengal would not tolerate such threats and called on Modi to resign if he could not protect Indian cities from Pakistani threats. The political row underscored how Pakistani rhetoric was directly affecting Indian domestic politics. Meanwhile, the Indian government maintained its standard posture of dismissing Pakistani threats as bluster, though the MEA did not issue a formal condemnation of Asif's Kolkata remarks. Asif had made the threat while speaking in Sialkot, alleging India was planning a false flag operation, and also threatening RSS offices. The remarks came amid elevated India-Pakistan tensions following Operation Sindoor, the Indus Waters Treaty suspension, and Pakistan's ongoing diplomatic push around the Iran conflict.
