DOJ Charges Venezuelan Man Shot by ICE in Austin With Assaulting Federal Officer

Federal prosecutors charged Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, 28, the Venezuelan DoorDash driver shot by an ICE officer in North Austin on Sept. 20, with assaulting a federal officer. A complaint alleges he refused commands to exit his vehicle during a targeted stop of a person with a final removal order, sped away and struck an officer with his side mirror; he faces up to 20 years if convicted. The complaint also says the officer who fired was not wearing a body camera and another agent turned off his during the pursuit.
