ICE Launches Commercial Driver's License Fraud Tipline, Citing Fatal Crashes Involving Undocumented Drivers

ICE's Homeland Security Investigations division, partnering with the Department of Transportation, announced a new public tipline (866-347-2423) on September 9, 2026 for reporting suspected commercial driver's license (CDL) fraud. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said 'too many American lives have been lost or permanently changed because illegal aliens who have no business being on our roads have been granted CDLs.' DHS's release cited four fatal crashes involving CDL holders who were undocumented immigrants: a July 2026 Pennsylvania semi-truck crash that killed a state trooper (driver held a Massachusetts-issued CDL), a February 2026 Indiana head-on collision that killed four people (Pennsylvania-issued CDL), a November 2025 Oregon crash that killed a newlywed couple (California-issued CDL), and the August 2025 Florida Fort Pierce turnpike crash that killed three people (California-issued CDL). The tipline follows 'Operation Highway Shield,' which DHS says removed more than 800 truckers from U.S. roads in August including 51 undocumented immigrants, an October 2025 Oklahoma operation that arrested 120 undocumented immigrants (91 driving commercial vehicles on CDLs), and a Department of Transportation review that shut down more than 110 driving schools and revoked over 30,000 CDLs issued without proper vetting, with 160 more schools proposed for removal from the federal registry.
