Delaney Hall Hunger and Labor Strike Ends After Weeks of Guard Retaliation — Detainees Transferred to Seven States
Advocates confirmed on June 22, 2026 that the month-long hunger and labor strike by 300+ detainees at Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey — which began May 22 — had effectively ended, not because conditions improved but because of guard intimidation tactics. Eyes on ICE advocate Sally Pillay said detainees 'resorted to going back to job assignments and eating' after facing disciplinary segregation and other retaliation. Hundreds of striking detainees were transferred out of Delaney Hall to facilities in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania — far from their New Jersey families and legal counsel — a dispersal advocates said was designed to break strike solidarity. Additional retaliation included solitary confinement and cutting off commissary access. The strike had drawn a Human Rights Watch report (June 3), New Jersey Attorney General and Newark city lawsuits against operator GEO Group, and weeks of protests and curfews outside the facility.
