AP Investigation: ICE Detainee Suicides at Unprecedented Rate — At Least 10 Deaths Since Trump's Return, 7 Since October 2025; Average Age 32; Mental Health Screening Failures Documented at Multiple Facilities

The Associated Press published an investigation on May 27, 2026 finding that detainees in ICE custody are dying by suicide at a pace unprecedented in the agency's two-decade history. At least 10 detainees have died by suicide since President Trump returned to office in January 2025 and ordered ICE to dramatically expand arrests and deportations. Seven of those deaths occurred since October 2025, already the most in any single fiscal year in ICE's history — whereas ICE typically records just one or no suicides per year. Nine of the 10 who died were Hispanic men; one was a Chinese national. Their average age was 32. Most had been in ICE custody for less than a month, and in some cases only days, at the time of their death. The AP investigation documented systemic failures: at least three of the nine facilities where suicides occurred have struggled to meet ICE's own requirement that detainees receive mental health screenings within 12 hours of arrival. Staff at multiple facilities ignored signs of distress, delayed mental health treatment, failed to monitor detainees already flagged as at risk, permitted access to materials that could be used for self-harm, and in some cases placed distressed individuals in isolation — which experts say exacerbates feelings of humiliation and helplessness. The investigation drew on ICE inspection reports, jail records, and expert testimony. A companion investigation by NBC News, published May 21, 2026, had analyzed more than 1,000 emergency 911 calls from six ICE detention centers across the country over the past year, finding 28 involving serious self-harm: one man swallowed a razor blade, another drank cleaning chemicals, and at least three cut their wrists. DHS attributed the rising suicide rate solely to the larger detention population, a claim experts dispute. The AP and NBC investigations come as ICE operates its largest detention system in agency history — 73,000+ individuals — following the October 2025 termination of third-party medical care contracts and the May 5, 2026 closure of the Office of Immigration Detention Ombudsman (OIDO), leaving the system with no independent oversight.
