ICE Moved Detainees From Overcrowded Mesa Facility Before Congressional Oversight Visit

| ICE

Arizona Mirror reported on April 9, 2026 that ICE moved detainees out of an overcrowded Mesa, Arizona holding facility in the days preceding a planned congressional oversight visit by Democratic Representatives Greg Stanton and Yassamin Ansari. The facility, intended for temporary holds of up to 157 individuals, had at times housed up to 800 people in a single day and averaged 513 in the two weeks before the visit was announced. After the congressional delegation informed ICE of the planned visit, numbers dropped sharply to their lowest level of the year. Almost immediately after the inspection, the numbers began to climb again. The incident was seen as a deliberate effort to conceal overcrowding conditions from congressional oversight, echoing earlier reporting on ICE's resistance to transparency about rapidly expanded detention facilities.
