Migrant Protection Protocols (Remain in Mexico) Implemented
DHS implements the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), also known as 'Remain in Mexico,' requiring asylum seekers who present at the southern border to wait in Mexico while their U.S. immigration cases are adjudicated. Over 70,000 migrants were enrolled before Biden ended the program in 2021. Advocates document dangerous conditions in Mexican border cities where enrollees awaited hearings.
