Orbán Re-Elected Fidesz Party Leader Despite Historic Election Loss

At Fidesz's party congress on June 13, Viktor Orbán was re-elected party leader for another term, with 729 of 737 delegates voting in favour, none against, and eight abstentions — no rival candidate ran against him. The vote came just two months after Fidesz's landslide defeat to Péter Magyar's Tisza party ended Orbán's 16-year premiership. In his pre-vote speech, Orbán took 'full responsibility' for the election loss but argued Fidesz had been a 'fantastic governing party' for 16 years and now needed structural changes — including a broadened party presidency and stronger local organization — to function as an effective opposition capable of one day returning to government.
