Péter Magyar Sworn in as Prime Minister of Hungary — 16 Years of Orbán Rule End on Europe Day

| Hungary

On May 9, 2026 — Europe Day — the Hungarian National Assembly held its inaugural session beginning at 10:00 AM at the Budapest Parliament building. President Tamás Sulyok presided over the swearing-in ceremony. Magyar was elected Prime Minister by 140 votes in favour, 54 against, and 1 abstention. His 15-member cabinet (minus the vacant Justice Ministry) was simultaneously sworn in. Ágnes Forsthoffer of the Tisza Party was elected as the new Speaker of the National Assembly in a landmark vote — the first non-Fidesz Speaker since 2010. Thousands of supporters gathered at Kossuth Square outside parliament, waving Hungarian and EU flags, as the transition was broadcast live across Europe. Viktor Orbán, breaking a 36-year tradition, did not attend the inaugural session and gave no speech — an unusually total break with parliamentary decorum. Foreign leaders including several EU heads of government sent congratulatory messages.
