Magyar Government Issues First Decree — Office for Investigation of Corruption Crimes Established
Among the first acts of the Magyar government after its inauguration on May 9 was a decree establishing a dedicated Office for Investigation of Corruption Crimes (OICC). The new body is designed to be independent of the Interior Ministry and existing police structures — which critics noted had been politicized under Orbán — and will have the authority to investigate public corruption, including cases involving former government officials, oligarchs connected to Fidesz, and misuse of EU funds. The creation of the OICC is a key milestone on the roadmap agreed with the European Commission to unlock €17B in frozen EU funds. Magyar framed the institution as Hungary's domestic equivalent of the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), which Hungary had refused to join under Orbán. Hungary's formal application to join EPPO was simultaneously submitted as a government resolution on May 9.
