Hungarian Parliament Final Preparations for May 9 Inaugural Session — Sulyok Completes Party Consultations

| Hungary

President Tamás Sulyok completed formal consultations with all parliamentary parties on May 4, 2026 in preparation for the National Assembly's inaugural session scheduled for May 9 at 10:00 AM. Consultations covered mandate verification procedures, oath document formats, seating arrangements, and elections of parliamentary officials (Speaker, Deputy Speakers, committee chairs). All four parties represented — Tisza, Fidesz-KDNP, Mi Hazánk, and KDNP — confirmed participation. Péter Magyar is set to be elected Prime Minister by parliament and sworn in the same day — May 9, Europe Day — a date chosen by Magyar symbolically to underscore Hungary's commitment to European integration. The simultaneous swearing-in of his 16-member cabinet will also take place on May 9. Fidesz, now with 52 seats (26.1%), will take up its role as opposition for the first time since 2010, with Gergely Gulyás designated as parliamentary opposition leader.
