Fidesz Wins Second Consecutive Supermajority Under New Electoral Map
On April 6, 2014, Fidesz-KDNP retained its two-thirds parliamentary majority, winning 44.5% of the vote and 133 of 199 seats under the newly gerrymandered electoral system — the first election held under the redrawn boundaries. The OSCE/ODIHR preliminary report noted the election was characterized by 'an unequal playing field' with public media coverage that 'heavily favored the governing party.' Opposition parties remained fragmented and failed to mount a united challenge. The result was Hungary's first ever supermajority won with under 50% of votes.
