Iran Seizes UAE-Linked Tanker Near Qeshm Island in First Ship Seizure of the Crisis

| Hormuz Crisis

Iranian state media confirmed the IRGC seized a UAE-linked tanker and diverted it toward Qeshm Island, alleging the vessel had ignored Iran's designated shipping route and failed to pay transit fees. It is the first outright vessel seizure of the crisis, following a string of attacks on ADNOC-linked tankers earlier in the month, including a third ADNOC tanker attacked Aug 8. The UAE Foreign Ministry called use of the strait 'as a tool of economic coercion or blackmail' an act of piracy, and shipowners flagged the seizure as a fresh driver of already-elevated war-risk insurance premiums on Gulf-adjacent routes.
