PM Fils-Aimé Tells Special UN Meeting Haitians 'Can Wait No Longer' as GSF Renewal Vote Looms

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé addressed a special UN meeting on the future of security in Haiti on September 24, 2026, saying "There is a people. A people who can wait no longer. A people waiting to regain security, to return home to work, to send their children to school, and to freely choose their leaders." He said Haiti's next government "must come through the ballot box" since "voting restores legitimacy," and confirmed general elections remain scheduled for December 13, 2026, with electoral operations launched, citizens registering, and political organizations already certified. He also linked security gains to combating "the illicit flows that fuel violence." UN Special Representative Carlos Ruiz Massieu and ECOSOC President Amar Bendjama also spoke. The meeting underscored the strained state of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) ahead of the Security Council's expected September 30 vote on renewing its mandate: the force counted only 1,083 deployed personnel against a 5,500-person authorized ceiling, while 6.4 million Haitians require humanitarian assistance and nearly 1.5 million remain internally displaced.
