Gang Massacres 61 Celebrating Haiti's World Cup Match Against Scotland
Shortly after Haiti's World Cup match against Scotland on June 13, 2026, a crowd of roughly 300 people — including a musical group — walked into a gang-controlled neighborhood of the Port-au-Prince metro area while celebrating. Gunmen, some positioned on rooftops, opened fire on the crowd. At least 61 people were killed and 20 injured, including at least seven children, the youngest just seven years old. The UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) documented the attack as one of the deadliest single incidents of the March–July 2026 surge in gang violence in the Plaine du Cul-de-Sac and Cité Soleil corridor, detailed in its August 6, 2026 human rights report. The tragedy occurred during what was otherwise a rare moment of national unity around Haiti's first World Cup qualification in over 50 years.
