PM Fils-Aimé Formally Abandons August 2026 Elections; New Target End of Year
On May 12, 2026, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé declared on Magik9 radio that 'it is clear that the security conditions are not met for us to have elections in August' — the first explicit abandonment of the August 30 date by the transitional government itself. He announced a revised target of elections by end of 2026 with a new president in place by February 7, 2027. The CEP had already postponed voter and candidate registration indefinitely on April 8, and a May 6 rule requiring parties to have 30,000 registered members effectively eliminated most of the 320 registered parties. Twenty-three communes remained inaccessible under gang control.
