Gang Violence Hits Southeast Haiti for First Time at Scale — Attacks in Seguin Kill at Least 7, Displace 1,300+

| Haiti

Armed attackers attributed to the Viv Ansanm gang coalition launched attacks on the mountainous Seguin area within the Marigot commune of Haiti's Sud-Est department on April 13, 2026, marking a significant geographic expansion of gang violence beyond its traditional strongholds in Port-au-Prince and the Artibonite. At least seven people were killed. Attackers set fire to the local police sub-station and damaged police vehicles, eliminating the community's only security presence. The violence displaced more than 1,300 people in Marigot municipality — the first time displacement of this scale directly linked to armed attacks has been recorded in the Sud-Est department. Mayor René Danneau of Marigot appealed urgently to the Haitian government and security forces for reinforcements. The attacks followed a broader pattern of gang expansion: just two weeks earlier, Gran Grif had massacred civilians in the Artibonite, and the Sud-Est had been considered one of Haiti's relatively safer regions. The Savien gang simultaneously conducted attacks in the Artibonite on the same day.
