1.4 Million Haitians Displaced as IOM Reports 40% Surge Since End of 2024

| Haiti

As of March 29, 2026, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed that more than 1.4 million people were internally displaced in Haiti — a 40% increase since the end of 2024, approaching the displacement levels of the 2010 earthquake. The Centre Department recorded a 140% increase in displacement, Grand Nord a 98% increase, and Artibonite a 77% increase, reflecting the geographic expansion of gang violence beyond Port-au-Prince. Approximately half the displaced population consists of children under 18. The 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan seeks $880 million but had secured only 24% of needed funding, with U.S. USAID reductions severely weakening the response. An estimated 6.4 million Haitians — more than half the population — require humanitarian assistance, including 600,000 estimated to be experiencing famine-level food insecurity.
