US Payrolls Rise Just 29,000 in September; Unemployment Ticks Up to 4.2%

The US economy added 29,000 nonfarm jobs in September versus a consensus of about 84,000, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2% (forecast 4.1%). July was revised to a loss of 10,000 and August down to 133,000, cutting prior counts by 60,000 combined. Private payrolls rose 46,000 while government shed 17,000; participation edged up to 61.8%.
