August Jobs Report Blowout — Payrolls Surge 162,000 vs 53,000 Expected, Stocks Slip as September Hike Odds Jump to 60%
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' August 2026 Employment Situation report, released Friday, showed nonfarm payrolls rose 162,000 — dramatically ahead of the roughly 53,000-65,000 consensus forecast among economists polled by Dow Jones — while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%. The prior two months were revised up: June's gain was revised from +20,000 to +31,000 (+11,000) and July's from -23,000 to +21,000 (+44,000), lifting combined June-July employment by 55,000 versus previously reported. By industry, food services and drinking places added 59,000 jobs and local government education added 42,000, while information employment fell 23,000 on continued weakness in computing infrastructure, data processing/web hosting, publishing, and broadcasting. The report reversed a one-day-old dovish narrative: coming just a day after Fed Governor Waller signaled openness to a September hold, the blowout payrolls number sent CME FedWatch odds of a September 16 rate hike jumping to roughly 60.4% (from about 49.4% the day before), since strong employment gives the Fed more room to keep tightening against above-target inflation. Stocks fell on the news despite — or because of — the strength: the S&P 500 slipped about 0.3-0.5%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped roughly 245-300 points (about 0.5-0.7%) to around 53,325, and the Nasdaq Composite eased about 0.2-0.4%; the 10-year Treasury yield held around 4.76%. Semiconductor names outperformed on the day (Nvidia +1.4%, AMD +4.2%, SanDisk +10.4%, Micron +4.6%), while Lululemon sank as much as 17.4% after missing revenue targets, unrelated to the jobs data. Analysts said the report 'does lean toward the Fed increasing rates' on September 16, though cautioned it was 'not a foregone conclusion' given two more inflation prints due before the meeting.
